Feeling Green on phi phi

Feb 08, 2012

Once Mr Baudu found out how expensive electricity is on the island, he seized on the opportunity to bring his company's experience in green energy to Thailand.

At Abalone's French headquarters, the building features several environmental flourishes including wind turbine, thermal solar energy, photovoltaic solar cells and hydrogen storage. The office provides much of its own energy...

Back to Koh Phi Phi / druk 1: surviving after the tsunami

List Price: £9.73

Things to do in Ko Phi Phi

Just a short boat ride away from the south coast of Thailand lie the six islands of Ko Phi Phi. Of these Ko Phi Phi Don is the only island that is inhabited. It also has some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in the whole of Thailand. Of course it’s difficult to imagine whilst looking out at the calm turquoise waters, that it was only a few years ago that the island was all but wiped out when the Tsunami hit. The island has recovered well after its ordeal, and the tourist village of and guesthouses of Ton Sai have been successfully rebuilt.

If you’re thinking of heading to Phi Phi and you’re looking for some activities to do when you get there then here are some ideas to help you.

Scuba Diving With Sharks

Known to be one of the world’s scuba diving hot spots, the waters around ko Phi Phi are home to masses of colourful coral reefs, and a wide variety of marine life including the hawksbill turtle, the reef shark, and the leopard shark.

There are several scuba diving centers on the island, which cater to all levels from beginner to advanced. Tourists can get their diving licence on the island, and all the diving centers on the island offer the same prices for their dives.

Visit “The Beach”

It is easy to get a boat to the nearby national park. This island is home to Maya Bay, which is famous for being the set for the movie “The Beach.” A few years ago Maya Bay was getting a bad reputation for having been spoiled by tourists leaving rubbish behind. It has since been cleaned up and it is now the responsibility of travelers to leave nothing behind.

Try Cliff Jumping

For the really adventurous traveler, there is the option of a cliff jumping trip, which involves a tour around the island, with an experienced guide to point out the safest places to jump from the cliff tops into the sea.

Activities for Travelers on a Budget

If you’re looking for some activities to do during your stay on the island whilst trying to save money there are still a few options available;

Adventures in Thailand: I Go Phi Phi (The "Perfect Beach ...

I took a one day boat tour that took me and about thirty other passengers to Phi Phi Ley, the island right next door. Here was the famous Maya Beach where  Leonardo DiCaprio bore his fine chest in the film (based on Alex Garland’s novel of the same name) and cemented Phi Phi’s road to over-tourism.  So, as a result the beach wasn’t as secretive and deserted like it was in the movie. Today dozens of boats stopped here so snap happy tourists could have a ‘look see’ and take some photos.  It was still a gorgeous cliff-rimmed cove, but the tiny beach was just too crowded.  We snorkeled around Maya Bay and several sights around these islands. I have to say that I saw more sea life here than I did at the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia.  The waters here are crystal clear and teeming with all kinds of tropical fish, sea cucumbers, coral, sharks, and sea urchins.

We also got to kayak around the bay and stop off at a little cove they call “Monkey Beach.” Why? Crazily enough there are monkeys here! Doing all their monkey things—stealing people’s water bottles, eating bananas (yup), and yes, even having monkey-sex right in front of the gawking, voyeuristic tourists. It was a quick but good show. It was like the “Red Light District” of Monkey-town.  I think the monkeys like to be watched. Maybe they were hoping for a tip. They may not “see, hear, or speak evil” but the little guys certainly do some evil.

Monkeying Around in Phi Phi (photo by Lisa Lubin)

And, of course, in tourist-filled places like Phi Phi it has become quite a wet and wild tradition. On my way back from the port and my tour of the islands, it was a good thing I was wearing a bathing suit because I got soaked. So what did I do? Punched a hole in the top of my water bottle and retaliated, of course!

The BEST Family Vacation Destination in Southern Thailand! Relax ...

As May comes to a close, it’s hard for me to believe that we’ve been back from Thailand for almost two months.  There is so much turmoil in Bangkok that it’s hard to believe since we were just there.  I take long walks in the morning and evening, and I find myself re-approaching our time—the ups and downs of our two month adventure.

One of the ups was an awesome UP.  Before we went to Cambodia (and go the Dengue fever), Brian and I took the kids to Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort .  I’d heard about this spot over three years ago before our first trip to Thailand.

Back then you could reserve a bungalow on the beach for $30!  It’s double now, but still, it’s pretty cheap compared to a hotel room in Maui.  If the travel bug is buzzing around you, and you are looking for a wonderful place to take your kids, bookmark this page for when you are ready!

Welcome to Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort!  The BEST Family vacation spot in Southern Thailand!  You take a two hour ferry from Krabi or Phuket to Koh Phi Phi (an island that was hit pretty hard by the Tsunami and has since rebuilt itself into amazing vacation spot).  After you arrive in Koh Phi Phi, you get in a long tail boat with your backpacks and go another thirty minutes to the East side of the island.

Where you eventually come to this lone, private beach that a handful of bungalows share.

If you want to R-E-L-A-X, this is the best place.  Most people are only there a few days and wish they’d stayed longer.  I’d say a 7-10 day stay is perfect.  You’ve got one restaurant to eat from.  This fact kept us unsure of whether or not to go, but let me tell you, the food ROCKS!  Huge menu, open aired, and so laid back—you won’t be disappointed.

When we were there, there were Italian kids, French kids, Swedish kids—all speaking three languages.  Pascaline and Blaze were the only Americans.  At one point, they realized that all the other kids were talking English for their benefit.  Blaze decided he wants to learn a few more languages because English doesn’t seem to be enough now.

Koh Phi Phi, Thailand « Travel with a mate

Phi phi is known as the party island on the west coast of Thailand so the thought of spending 9 days there seemed a little excessive. As it turned out it was the right amount of time considering our experience!

We arrived by boat from Krabi town as we’d missed the early boat straight from Railay. It’s only an hour and a half from Krabi’s main port. Be sure to barter a good price for your tickets. Never accept the price they quote. It’s often twice what you should pay.

Arriving in Koh Phi Phi is an event itself. The army of people trying to make you go to their hotel or get

you on another boat to smaller islands is pretty intense after an uneventful journey.

Armed with a badly drawn and highly inaccurate map to a hotel we’d been recommended we set off walking through the tight streets and market stalls. We opted for a different hotel after seeing and smelling the rather dodgy room. We paid 1000 Baht for an air con room at the ‘K House 2′ opposite the posh hotel of ‘P P Casita’.

We bumped into our Aussie friend once again and soon our first night in Phi Phi was what everyone’s must be. Drinks on the beach as we watched fire shows and crazy drunk tourists getting burnt by flaming skipping ropes.

A lazy day on the beach the next day, swimming in the very shallow and unbelievably hot sea. We decided a night off the booze was in order as we’d trek up to the view point the next day for a great view of the hour glass shaped strip of sand that is Koh Phi Phi.

The trekking started off fine although I could tell something was upsetting my body. By the time we were at the view point I knew something was up but stupidly pressed on and trekked down the other side to Ralee beach. It wasn’t long before a long boat back to our beach was much needed and I only just made it back to our hotel before a very violent 24 bug kicked in. Debs soon felt the same and the next day and a half are a blur of being sick, sleeping and watching a lot of movies on the satellite TV. Never has a TV and air conditioning been such a life saver.

Villas In Krabi, Luxury Holidays At Thailands Andaman Sea

Krabi is a province of astonishing beauty, with spectacular views over the Andaman Sea and the closest coastal access to the Koh Hong island group, and the more famous Koh Phi Phi island. The province is largely ignored however by vacationers on luxury holidays in Thailand as Phuket is a short distance away and more notorious for it's luxury villas and condos.

Luxury villas are operating in Krabi, with all the amenities and service a guest would expect from the more developed Phuket, but with greatly reduced prices to reflect the seclusion and access of many of them. For a guest seeking isolation and total relaxation Krabi is a perfect place to come for your luxury holiday in Thailand.

The accommodation that has been built along the coast of Krabi province and islands off the coast such as Koh Lanta all share the same characteristics: private, luxurious and self-contained. Most have direct access to the beach and with spas, pools, restaurants and even shops, there is no need for guests ever to leave the confines of the villa area. Many villas offer personal chefs and maids to attend to your needs throughout the day, and drivers to shuttle you around should you wish to explore.
