How About A Birthday Barbecue Party? | Recreation and Sports ...

A lot of people over the age of twenty have a sort of love-hate relationship with birthdays. They love to have a party and be the centre of attention and a lot of fun, but they hate getting older. But I believe that people should celebrate their birthdays. After all, you enjoy going to someone else’s birthday party and so you are morally obliged to put one on for others too.

And birthday parties ought to be a lot of fun. It does not have to be a children’s type party, of course, but you could still dress up and play games.

You could put on a barbecue for all your friends and family and do it cowboy style. Have a barn dance that would make ‘JR’ proud. The food for this is straightforward enough. Start by laying on plenty of Texas sized spare ribs, half-pounder hamburgers, T-bone steaks, and jumbo size hot dogs with loads of bread and salad.

For music, it has to be country and everybody has to put on cowboy clothing, although it would probably be better to leave the sidearms at home. Annie Oakley style costume for the ladies and Buffalo Bill style for the gents. If it is going to be a big party, ask everyone to bring their own favourite dish, in true Southern style. That would be a great way to celebrate an adult’s birthday for the family.

If you do not go much on the macho cowboy idea, you could try a Caribbean style barbecue. Wear flash short sleeved shirts and bright colours or swimming costumes. The music could be reggae and calypso and the food would be grilled fish and chicken with salad and plenty of fresh fruit. Offer hot and not so hot chilli dips and barbecue sauces. You could have a go at limbo dancing too, that is always good for a laugh.

Or perhaps you would rather a humorous barbecue party and all dress up like the hillbilly family ‘The Clamperts’! That would be fun. The men could wear old velvet hats and old clothes tied up with string like Jed and Jethro and the women could come as Ellie May or Granny. I think that the authentic food like possum and bullfrog might be difficult to get hold of in some areas, but you could just supply what you want for this one. Steaks, hamburgers and fried fish; bread and salad with cake to finish.

DCCC Pulls Out of Hawaiian Special Election, Essentially Conceding ...

District ( who can forget the Dede Scozzofava mess? ). Well, the GOP luck looks like it's about to change: the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee today announced it is pulling out of the special election to fill Rep. Neil Abercrombie's seat. Abercrombie, a Democrat, left office just before the final health care vote to run for governor of Hawaii – unlike his GOP counterpart Nathan Deal who postponed his run for higher office in Georgia to help his party on the crucial vote.

“The DCCC will not be investing additional resources in the HI-01 (Abercrombie-open) special election,” Jennifer Crider, a DCCC spokeswoman, said in a statement. “Local Democrats were unable to work out their differences. The DCCC will save the resources we would have invested in the Hawaii special election this month for the general election in November.”

So far this cycle much of the primary attention has gone to the right what with the advent of the Tea Party movement. But in this case, Democrats are proving that they are also capable of friendly fire. The district is President Obama's childhood home and is rated D+11 by the cook Political Report. And yet Republican Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou looks poised to win the May 22 special election. This is because the two Democratic candidates, former Rep. Ed Case (brother of AOL's Steve Case) and President of the State Senate Colleen Hanabusa have engaged in a vicious war that has essentially ended in a double suicide – or homicide, depending on how you look at it. When your own party throws up its hands in disgust, you know you're doing something wrong.

Case is more of a Blue Dog moderate and Hanabusa is a progressive. Hanabusa enjoys the support of local party establishment: no shocker since many are still smarting from Case's primary challenge of Senator Daniel Akaka. DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen had asked Abercrombie to throw his weight behind one of the candidates to help keep his former seat but in another profile in political courage, Abercrombie has yet to endorse, presumably for fear of angering one wing of the party since he's in a tough primary battle himself for the governor's mansion . Aloha, Hawaiian Republican Party, welcome to Hawaii's first district.

How to make Hawaiian Luau Party - Info Barrel

Have plenty of alternative drinks available that are non-alcoholic including water.

Greet everyone the Hawaiian way, with a kiss on each cheek and a lei over their head!

If you mean to go "whole hog" the main thing that makes a "luau" a luau, is the steamed pig. Cooked traditionally, you need to dig a deep pit and line it with large rocks. Wrap the pig in ti leaves and lay it in the pit. Start a fire in the pit, and cover everything with more large rocks, so that essentially the pig is steaming for 24 hours from heat of the "imu" or fire pit. Pull out the whole pig a day later and you will have absolutely the most delicious pork you have ever eaten!

REVIEW: Flimsy Princess Kaiulani Serves Up Hawaiian History Lite ...

Designed to be both essential history lesson and costume weeper, Princess Kaiulani comes up short on both fronts: Deadly earnest intentions and lack of dramatic gumption ensure that the story of Hawaii’s favored daughter remains under-told. Skimping on detail and narrative depth, the film manages to misuse its embarrassment of natural resources — beautiful brown people in Victorian garb, for one thing; the tetchy notion that British colonization suited the Hawaiians better than American imperialism did, for another — in its determination to honor ? — is actually the unhappy end of a sovereign and prosperous country, one that managed to figure out electricity long before the mainland did. Despite the fact that he shot in Honolulu’s actual palace and on location in England, Forby’s most spectacular visual would seem to be the young woman playing the Scottish-Hawaiian princess: Q’orianka Kilcher, who shares her character’s distinctive blended heritage. Her features have hardened since her breakout role (playing another sufferer of American folly, Pocahontas) in The New World , and her sharp chin, long cheekbones and small, glowing eyes suit a tragic princess well. But while Kilcher can pull some impressive faces, they form the extent of her characterization. This princess has two speeds: petulant intensity and girlish charm.

She has, at least, plenty of cause to work the former. Carted off to England at age 13 after the Americans attempt to overthrow Hawaii’s monarchy, Princess Kaiulani becomes just another piker getting paddywhacked through the British school system. Boarding with friends of her father’s (her Hawaiian mother has died), she does not adjust to her demotion to “princess of nowhere” well: She’s alienated from her host family, particularly the unimpressed young son Clive (Shaun Davies), and her treatment at the hands of the headmistress sets up an interesting angle on class and racial tensions. But Forby scraps the storyline almost as soon as it is established. We cut from Kaiulani’s first, ominous humiliation at school to two years later, where we find her a little calmer and on the cusp of falling in love with Clive, whose initial derision practically stamped “future love interest” across his forehead.
